This year, more than others, anything can happen in the College Football world. We've already seen the defending national champion get thrown around like a rag doll, the Big 12 playing hot potato with who is the conference favorite, and a playoff contender, Ohio State, hasn't even hit the field yet. What a perfect time to put your financial security in the hands of 18-22-year-old college kids. Here is your week 6 gambling preview...allegedly.
A few things to know:
1. Spreads (how much a team can win or lose by)
2. Moneyline (will the team I select win, yes or no)
3. Teaser of the Week (altered spread lines, minimum of 2 games)
4. Parley of the Week (all or nothing, multiple game picks)
SPREADS
It's safe to say that the Gators offense is firing on all cylinders. Trask to Pitts is in midseason form and the offensive line has taken a significant step forward from last year, allowing the run game to go from horrendous to decent. It's also safe to say that the Texas A&M defense isn't looking too hot. They gave up 544 yards to Alabama last week and Florida has just as much speed as Alabam does. Expect this one to be close to start, and then get out of hand in the 2nd half. Florida covers.
#5 Notre Dame (-20.5) vs Florida State
Florida State lost their season opener to a Georgia Tech team one year removed from abandoning the triple option. They then got blown out to in-state rivals Miami 52-10. After that, they were down 14-0 to Jacksonville State, an FCS team, before a QB change propelled them to a victory. Even if Notre Dame is half as good as they are, it still won't be enough for them to not cover the spread. Easy money betting against FSU this year folks, easy money.
#2 Alabama vs Ole Miss (+23)
Lane Kiffin has proven himself to bring offensive firepower to everywhere he's been. At FAU, Chris Robison instantly became one of C-USA's biggest weapons. At Ole Miss, Matt Corral has blossomed to the 3rd best passer in the country, according to CFB-Reference. Expect Ole Miss to hang around with Alabama enough to keep it within 3 touchdowns. Buckle in, it's gonna be a shootout. More on this game later.
MONEYLINE
Mississippi State (+130) vs Kentucky
Kentucky is too good a team to start the year off 0-2. They hung in deep in the 4th quarter against Auburn and fell victim to #CollegeKickers in their game against Ole Miss.
Unfortunately, Kentucky ranks dead last among eligible teams in Passing Defense according to the NCAA. They'll be going up against a Mississippi State team that can strike at will. Mississippi State at plus odds looks very appealing...a little too appealing.
Kansas State (+275) vs TCU
If you like the color purple, this game is for you. Kansas State is led by QB Skyler Thompson, who with each passing* week is looking more and more capable to lead this Wildcats team on a run. It started with an upset win over Oklahoma and continues against a TCU team that, still high off their big win against Texas, might get caught looking ahead (Oklahoma in two weeks, after a bye). Classicc look-ahead syndrome here. Give me Kansas State's shade of purple.
*See what I did there?
TEASER OF THE WEEK
In a teaser, you can buy additional points, so long as you have at least two games involved. You also must win both.
6-point teaser
The original lines for these games were Georgia (-12.5) and Miami (+15). By buying 6 points for both of these games, you are able to give yourself a three-touchdown cushion for a Miami team that is going up against a de facto NFL team in Clemson. D'Eriq King has shown that he can strike at will, and you're going to need him to do that often to keep up with Clemson's Trevor Lawrence-led offense. You also are able to trim down a two-touchdown requirement, to a one-touchdown requirement for Georgia. While I may not trust Tennessee QB Jarrett Guarantano to always make the right decision, I do trust his offensive line to contain the fantastic Georgia defensive line. Call me soft, but I like insurance.
PARLEY OF THE WEEK
In a Parley, all results must come true in order for the entire parley to win. If a single team does not pull through with the result, the entire parley is lost.
#2 Alabama vs Ole Miss (Over 69 points)
#5 Notre Dame (-20.5) vs Florida State
I've already talked about the Notre Dame and Florida spreads, so let's talk about the Alabama-Ole Miss Over/Under. The Over/Under is the line that Vegas sets for the number of combined points scored in a game. In this case, 69 points. Two high flying offenses going up against each other and they only have to score 35 points each? Pair it up with two attractive spreads and you got yourself an appetizing parley.
