What a week huh? After three weeks of college football, it finally felt like a true college football Saturday. The SEC kicked off its 2020 season with fireworks galore, the Big 12 is making it extra difficult on themselves to put a team in the playoff, and the ACC is finally competitive (outside of Clemson, of course). Here's everything you need to know about Week 4.
SEC
Mississippi State 44, #6 LSU 34
Mike Leach has arrived and the entire SEC has been put on notice. Mississippi State showed the defending champions no mercy as they went into Death Valley and walked out with Leach's first win as an SEC head coach. Stanford transfer QB KJ Costello put up an SEC single-game passing record 623 yards to go along with 5 TDs. Just to recap, it took Mike Leach and KJ Costello ONE GAME IN THE SEC to set the single-game passing record. This is the same conference where just one year ago, Joe Burrow had the greatest offensive season in CFB history. Yeah, it looks like this whole Aid Raid thing is gonna work out just fine in Starkville.
#5 Florida 51, Ole Miss 35
This Florida offense is insanely good. Traditionally, 2nd-year QBs thrive in Dan Mullen's system and Trask is no exception. He tied the SEC opening-game TD record set by Joe Borrow last year (6), he threw for 416 yards, and he got his number one weapon, future first-rounder TE Kyle Pitts, the ball 8 times with half of those coming as TDs. With this Trask to Pitts connection running on all cylinders, who knows what defense will stop them. When you're 6'6", 240 pounds, and move like a slot receiver, it's nearly impossible to keep up. Take a look at Ole Miss LB #32 Jaquez Jones as he tries, keyword tries, to keep up with Pitts.
It's just not happening. So good luck to SEC defenses trying to slow this athletic freak down. They're gonna need all the help they can get.
#16 Tennessee 31, South Carolina 27
I, allegedly, took South Carolina at +3.5. I could talk about how South Carolina's new offense under OC Mike Bobo and Colorado State transfer QB Collin Hill was one of the best offenses a Will Muschamp team has put out in a decade (not saying much, I know). I won't. I could also talk about how Tennessee finally won a close game in the Jeremy Pruitt era. I, also, won't. Instead, I want you to see the reason South Carolina didn't have the opportunity to drive down the field and go for the win.
Talk about a bad beat.
Big 12
Kansas State 38, #3 Oklahoma 35
No, this is not 2019. Yes, Oklahoma lost to Kansas State, the same team that lost at home two weeks ago to Arkansas State. Oklahoma is good for at least one loss a year, but in their conference opener? Not what anyone in Norman expected. To Sooner fans, I say this: R E L A X. Spencer Rattler was in his 2nd game as a starter and there are going to be growing pains. You have to remember, Rattler is in his 2nd year of college. Kyler Murray was in his 4th year of college when he had his Heisman trophy-winning campaign for the Sooners. Is allowing 24 unanswered points in the 2nd half to end the game an ideal way to kick off your conference schedule? No. But this team will grow and Rattler will get more and more comfortable with each game played.
#8 Texas 63, Texas Tech 56
Lubbock, Texas is far. Like, really far. So If Texas went home to Austin empty-handed, it would not be a happy bus ride back. And it seemed like the Red Raiders were primed to do just that, until Texas Tech blew a 15 point lead with 3:13 left in the 4th quarter. Sam Ehlinger looked every bit the senior QB he is, sending the game into OT where they sealed the deal. Tech fans, hang in there.
Baylor 47, Kansas 14
I still love you Kansas.
ACC
#12 Miami 52, Florida State 10
Last week, Tyler and I talked about how this new Miami offense seems to be legit. It's just hard to fully commit to that when you struggle in the first half against UAB and then play Louisville, who doesn't even have a defense. But this performance against a relatively good FSU defense should be enough. D'Eriq King has put himself in the Heisman race and the defense is playing well enough to put them on the shortlist of ACC teams that get the privilege of losing to Clemson in the ACC title game.
Florida State on the other hand, well, this just about sums it up.
IT'S TIME TO TALK ABOUT PITT.
For those not indoctrated with the magic that is Pittsburgh football, welcome to the resistance. This is a team that consistently beats the teams it shouldn't, and loses to the teams it should beat. Which is why it is so beautiful that the Pittsburgh Panthers looks like a coherent team this year. QB Kenny Pickett is looking like the capable starter that they need him to be, they have a reliable RB in Vincent Davis, and their defense is one of the best in the country. No, for real. Take a look.
Saturday October 17th @ Miami is starting to look like a big one.
THIS HAS BEEN YOUR PITT UPDATE.
Group of Five
#13 UCF 51, East Carolina 28
The 3rd team from the state of Florida to drop 50, UCF had their offense on full display. It's a given that we're going to get points from this Dillion Gabriel led offense. UCF needs to dominate against inferior competition like ECU if it wants any shot of sneaking into the CFP this year. I mean, the Big 12 is doing their part. All the Knights have to do is take care of business.
The other American team looking to back their way into the CFP, Cincinatti let Army dictate the tempo of this football game. Anytime you go up against a triple option team, points are going to be at a premium. Cincinatti made sure to capitalize on those opportunities. Any team that puts up 24 with limited offensive opportunities is on the right track. All signs point to a UCF vs Cincinatti battle for the AAC championship.
I'll sign off with the best tweet I saw during Week 4. Enjoy.
